Joanna's interview was about three hours long and there are many details of her life in the guerrilla camp that unfortunately I had to leave out. She talked, for example, about some of the responsibilities she had as a woman guerrilla like night posts, guarding prisoners, grinding corn to make tortillas, or cleaning the camp. She also talked about much of the violence she witnessed as a child in San Miguel.
Summary
Joanna Carranza was born into a family of politicians. Her father was one of the founders of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) and a retired military officer. Her brother was mayor of San Miguel but killed by a death squad. Joanna experienced much of the increasing violence of the 80s, including the murder of many of his uncles.
In 1987 she went to college and became involved with the student movement. A few years later she joined the FMLN guerrilla army. Her testimony includes sad and funny moments, an authentic story of Salvadoran culture.
